{"id":1620,"date":"2021-11-28T17:58:40","date_gmt":"2021-11-28T22:58:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/corridorappalachien.ca\/wildlife-road-mortality-and-covid-19\/"},"modified":"2025-05-15T10:51:24","modified_gmt":"2025-05-15T14:51:24","slug":"wildlife-road-mortality-and-covid-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/corridorappalachien.ca\/en\/wildlife-road-mortality-and-covid-19\/","title":{"rendered":"HAS REDUCED HIGHWAY TRAFFIC IMPACTED ROADKILLS DURING THE PANDEMIC?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We were often asked during the pandemic if animal roadkills decreased during the COVID-19 confinement.<\/p>\n<p>Since traffic on the roads decreased during that period, it would be logical to have fewer wildlife-related accidents. However, the first studies on the subject have just come out and it turns out that the number of collisions with wildlife is about the same.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6442 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.corridorappalachien.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/11_Mortalite-routiere.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" title=\"\"> <em>Roadkills are unfortunately still very present.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>One of the hypotheses raised is that animals, faced with a less busy road, are less fearful and cross more often, causing as many or perhaps even more mortalities.<\/p>\n<p>Given these data, it is obvious that the solution remains the installation of structures allowing the safe passage of wildlife: green bridges, oversized culverts, wildlife shelves in culverts, all coupled with directional fences.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6444 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.corridorappalachien.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Simulation_v2-1024x671.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"642\" height=\"421\" title=\"\"> <em>Simulation of a wildlife crossing over Highway 10.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>To learn more, here is a link to one of the published articles: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-021-99233-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-021-99233-9<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Did wildlife road mortality really decrease during containment?
