Eastman, Quebec (September 18, 2020)<\/strong> \u2013 Appalachian Corridor welcomes the announcement made today by the Government of Quebec to grant $13,125,000<\/a> until 2022 to the Nature Conservancy of Canada (CNC) for the realization of the Partnership Project for Natural Environments (PPMN).<\/strong><\/p>\n

The grant, which will provide $ 1.8 million to Appalachian Corridor<\/strong> as well as significant contributions to the Fondation de la Faune du Qu\u00e9bec and Nature-Action Qu\u00e9bec, will target initiatives directed to southern Quebec\u2019s network of private protected areas where biodiversity is richer and where the pressures exerted on ecosystems are greater.<\/p>\n

“Appalachian Corridor thanks the Government of Quebec, the Minist\u00e8re de l\u2019Environnement et de la Lutte contre les changements climatiques and CNC for their sustained commitment to the protection of private lands and the expansion of the ecological network in our region,” says M\u00e9lanie Leli\u00e8vre, Executive Director of Appalachian Corridor. \u201cAppalachian Corridor is thrilled to continue its collaboration with CNC, the Fondation de la Faune du Qu\u00e9bec and Nature-Action Qu\u00e9bec – a partnership that has already produced many benefits for the environment and the community over the past three years.”<\/p>\n

The grant to CNC will have a significant leverage effect, as it is accompanied by a matching obligation. The intent is for the government contribution invested to be matched by an equivalent sum from CNC and its partners from federal or private funds. This will allow to at least double the budget available for the realization of the PPMN.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe territory in which the Appalachian Corridor operates – the Northern Green Mountains – has only 8% of protected areas,\u201d adds Leli\u00e8vre. \u201cThese funds, in addition to those that will come from our generous funders and donors, will have a direct impact on the acceleration of our land acquisition activities over the next few years which will be very positive for the ecosystem, fauna, flora and also for the community in the short and long terms.”<\/p>\n

Since its founding in 2002, Appalachian Corridor has allowed the protection in perpetuity of more than 14,400 hectares of land on its territory of action which extends from Granby to Sherbrooke, and south to the Canada-USA border.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Projet de partenariat pour les milieux naturels (PPMN – Partnership for Natural Areas)
\n<\/strong>The Projet de partenariat pour les milieux naturels (PPMN – Partnership for Natural Areas) is a three-year, $13-million grant to NCC by the minist\u00e8re de l\u2019Environnement et de la Lutte contre les changements climatiques.\u00a0<\/em>By investing in the establishment of financial partnerships with provincial conservation organizations, the program supports initiatives to protect ecologically significant natural areas. The partnership aims to develop and consolidate Quebec\u2019s network of privately protected areas.<\/p>\n
