Municipalities and RCMs

Collaboration with municipalities

We work with municipalities to integrate nature into local land-use planning. Our goal: to ensure that biodiversity and ecological connectivity have a place in urban plans and development projects. We provide guidance and support so that urban growth and natural environments can coexist.
More than ever, municipalities are being called upon to play a decisive role in adapting to climate change and protecting natural environments. Protecting these environments is an effective solution: it allows for carbon storage, safeguards fragile habitats, and ensures that species can move toward more favourable areas.
Corridor Appalachien can collaborate with you on land-use planning and biodiversity integration by developing conservation plans and carrying out ecological inventories. Because our team works across the region, we are able to provide a broad perspective that helps create and maintain the ecological connectivity essential for species survival throughout the territory.

Tools to Coexist With Nature

Sustainable Land Management

  1. Corridor Appalachien has published Cohabiter avec la nature! a guide for urban planners and local communities in the Southern Québec Appalachians. It offers concrete approaches for planning land use in ways that respect biodiversity. The guide is adapted from Make Room for Wildlife and features original illustrations by Jason W. Smith.
  2. Corridor Appalachien has developed a Guide des Ponceaux to explain the importance of ecological connectivity for biodiversity conservation.
  3. Regional county municipalities (RCMs), towns, and municipalities are key partners. Through their planning tools, they can protect natural environments and enhance ecological connectivity — the links between natural habitats that allow species to move freely.

As part of the Québec Ecological Corridors Initiative, we developed two toolkits:

  • One for RCMs
  • One for municipalities

These practical resources, available at connectiviteecologique.com, help to:

  • Understand the issues related to ecological connectivity
  • Discover examples of how to integrate it into planning tools
  • Take action to better adapt the territory to climate change

Need support?

Our team can present these tools to your elected officials, your municipal council, or at an event. We’re here to guide you according to your goals. Is your municipality outside our territory of action? Check the Directory of Voluntary Conservation Sites in Quebec to find an organization near you.
